Storylines

2001–05

Katie Addyman may have had the face of an angel when she first got close to Andy Sugden, but was branded a devil by his father.

Katie and Andy first met in July 2001 when they were both together in detention, they quickly began dating. Andy's adopted brother Robert Sugden was determined to come between them and tried to embarrass Andy by telling Katie that he could not afford to take her out for a meal. However Andy was given counter fit money by Cain Dingle and took Katie out to a romantic meal at Chez Marlon upstaging Roberts plan.

In September 2001 Eve Birch, Marc and Ollie Reynolds, Donna Windsor, Andy, Robert and Katie went for a night out at a club but they missed the bus back home. To impress Katie, Andy stole a car and the group travelled home but on the way Marc, who was driving, ran over their headmistress Jean Strickland. Terrified about the consequences, the group left the body and burnt the car. The guilt of the accident proved too much and they confessed. All of the group except Marc, including Katie and Andy, received community service.

While their peers enjoyed their youth and freedom, Katie and Andy got serious. Their fathers were horrified, feeling that Katie and Andy were too young to settle down. Attempting to prove their parents wrong, Katie got pregnant. She miscarried but she and Andy stuck together. When he was old enough, Andy took over Butler’s Farm and Katie moved in. Running the farm became Andy's priority and their relationship took second place. Unhappy with this, Katie went looking for excitement.

Despite planning her wedding to Andy, Katie could not control her feelings for Robert and they had an affair. They were seen by Andy's half-brother, Daz, and he told Andy. Katie had threatened Daz that if he said anything, she would make Andy put him in care and she did. The affair continued and Katie married Andy regardless. They were caught again - this time by Andy and Robert's sister, Victoria, but Robert bullied her to keep quiet.

When the truth emerged, Andy tried to shoot Robert but hit Jack instead. Jack was rushed to hospital but made a full recovery.

Katie moved out of Butler’s Farm and in with Robert. All went well until Sadie King, bored with her husband's constant talk of babies, started flirting with him. Despite being with Katie, Robert couldn't resist Sadie and their affair lasted for almost a year. Sadie even employed Katie at King & Sons and they became friends. Robert wasn't happy about this and refused Sadie's advances. In revenge, Sadie sacked Katie and ended their friendship.

For Katie, everything seemed to be coming together as Andy gave Katie and Robert his blessing when her life was ripped apart. Cain Dingle saw Robert with Sadie and told Andy that they were having an affair. Andy told Katie and devastated, she dumped Robert in May 2005. Andy comforted her and they spent a night together, discussing their marriage. He suggested they try again but Katie went to join her father. She left Andy on good terms, said goodbye to Donna and Chas and left a heartbroken Robert behind who begged her to stay.

2006–2009

Nearly a year passed and Katie Sugden made a new life with her father but tragedy struck when they were injured in a car crash. The police told Andy as he was her next of kin and he visited her in hospital. When she was discharged, Katie's mother asked her to join her in Greece but Katie joined Andy at Butler's Farm instead.

Although it seemed madness, Andy and Katie still cared for each other and decided to try again. However, it wasn't easy as Katie faced many critics, particularly Daz. He was angry Andy had taken her back and moved out briefly. Andy struggled to trust Katie but she was determined to make things work. Knowing it would make Andy happy, Katie was pleased when Daz returned but he was sure she would cheat again and kissed her. Horrified, she pushed him away but Jo saw them. They agreed not to mention it again or tell Andy. Jo, however, assumed they were having an affair. Katie and Jo struggled to get on. Jo annoyed Katie with her flirtatious behaviour so Katie asked her to move out but Jo blackmailed her, threatening to tell Andy about Daz kissing her if she wasn't allowed to stay. Katie agreed reluctantly and was furious when Jo told Andy. Katie and Daz insisted that the kiss was a mistake and meant nothing, unaware of Andy and Jo's affair. Katie and Jo made peace when Jo began helping financially. They made friends but that ended when Andy told Katie about his and Jo's affair. Katie threw them out but they soon returned as the lease was in Andy's name. Katie moved out, becoming Jo's bitter enemy.

Katie had a one night stand with Eric Pollard's son David Metcalfe when he was still dating Deiliah Dingle. This caused Deiliah and David to break up and she fled the village.

Due to her business partnership with Perdita Hyde-Sinclair, Katie, Perdy and Grayson became friends. Grayson also advised her about her divorce, leading her to develop feelings for him but kept her distance, refusing to do to Perdy what Jo had done to her. She supported Grayson and Perdy during Perdy's mental illness and Rosemary's departure. Seeing how devastated they were about being unable to have children, Katie offered to be their surrogate so Grayson asked her to move in. Katie saw how rocky their marriage was and concerned, discussed changing her mind about the surrogacy with Chas but couldn't disappoint the Sinclairs and went ahead. Her pregnancy was confirmed a couple of weeks later.

On Christmas Day, she was horrified to discover Perdy and Grayson had separated and that Perdy was now with Matthew King. Worried about the baby's future, she threatened to have an abortion but Grayson persuaded her not to. Katie stayed with Grayson at Mill Cottage and began an affair. Katie's friendship with Perdy was damaged further by Grayson's revelation of Perdy's blackmail. She wanted sole custody. Angry, Katie put a stop to the blackmail and revealed that she and Grayson were together and planned to be a family once the baby was born. Furious, Perdy attacked Katie but called an ambulance, fearing a miscarriage. Luckily, she and the baby were fine. Grayson told Matthew what had happened and he threw Perdy out so she moved in with Paul and Jonny.

Grayson and Katie's affair was much more stable than his marriage. The only thing Katie asked of Gray was honest and fidelity but soon discovered that she couldn't trust him. Following Perdy's attack, Katie refused to allow Perdy to even see the baby and Gray agreed, until a solicitor friend of his visited. He was acting for Perdy - she wanted custody. He gave Grayson her address, telling Grayson that this would be best settled out of court, so he visited. Horrified at where she was living, he got her a better flat and agreed to persuade Katie to allow her access. However, Katie found out sooner than Gray wanted. Devastated, she planned to put the baby up for adoption in revenge. In the end, she gave Perdy her baby and £20,000 that she had persuaded Grayson to give her, insisting Perdy leave the village on 22 July 2008. Grayson was devastated to lose Katie and the baby but Diane made him realise that if he wanted to be a father, he'd have to find Perdy. He confronted Katie and demanded she tell him where Perdy was but Katie refused. Grayson left the area to go looking for her.

Katie has not forgotten her old friends. When her ex-husband Andy's domestic abuse was revealed, Katie was horrified as he had never hit her when they were married. He moved into the Woolpack and Katie employed him. She also supervised his time with Sarah and Andy thought she wanted him back. Following a nativity play in the Woolpack, Andy kissed Katie and was horrified when she pushed him away. He turned nasty and she sacked him. When she heard that his wife Jo knew that Andy had kissed her, she visited Jo, telling her that she and Andy were history and suggesting Jo leave if she didn't want Andy back. Jo Sugden took her advice and left just before Christmas.

During December 2008, the Kings were evicted from Home Farm and declared bankrupt. Katie Sugden still ran her business from there but had to be let in and out of the house by a security guard. During late 2008 and early 2009 Katie lost most of her close friends - Matthew King died, and Anna, Donna Dingle and housemate Paul Lambert, left town. In January 2009, the new owners of Home Farm arrived - Mark and Natasha Wylde. Katie made friends instantly with Mark but Natasha was slower to trust Katie after catching her lying on a bed with Mark. They were actually moving it to the bedroom but Natasha wasn't happy about Katie being around. She and Katie get on but aren't friends.

During February, Katie caught the attention of both gamekeeper Lee Naylor and Nathan Wylde. Nathan used his position at Home Farm to make trouble for Lee. Katie was happy to spend time with both men but preferred Lee. Following a row with Lee, Nathan made it clear how he felt so she spent a night with him but caught him leaving. She realised that he wasn't serious but that soon changed. Katie remained friends with Lee and on discovering he was homeless, Katie insisted he stay with her. Nathan was unhappy but Katie told him to accept her decision or end things so he accepted it. Determined to get rid of Lee, Nathan drove him to leave his job and when Katie discovered Lee had repeated things she'd told him in confidence, she asked him to move out and dumped Nathan. Nathan wasn't happy and tried sabotaging her business in revenge, leading Katie to consider moving her business.

Katie then started dating Ryan Lamb, much to Nathan's displeasure. Katie and Ryan's relationship took time to get started as she wasn't sure she could trust him, after Grayson's behaviour. Eventually, she realised that she was over-reacting and they started dating properly. Everything was fine until Ryan's mother, Faye Lamb, concerned about local gossip surrounding Katie, invited her to dinner and grilled her about her past. Annoyed, Katie told Faye what she wanted to know and left. Ryan went after Katie and she told him everything, particularly about the baby she'd had and isn't in touch with him or his mother. Ryan was shocked but told Katie that he wouldn't dump her for telling the truth. Faye apologised to Ryan and Katie for interfering, particularly after Mark Wylde said Katie is a great girl. Unfortunately Ryan bonded a little too closely with Maisie Wylde, while out Christmas shopping and dumped Katie for her. Faye guessed that he had met someone else, particularly as he and Katie were talking about moving in together, but Ryan refused to say. When Ryan found out that Mark Wylde was his father, Katie let Ryan sleep on her sofa. As they started getting on well again, Nathan told Katie why Ryan dumped her - that he was having an affair with Maisie, later discovering that she was his half-sister.

2010-present

There has been continued speculation that Katie and Andy Sugden will one day resume their relationship, for a third time. In September 2010, Katie gets close to Andy again, helping him get counselling for the issues that stopped him being able to have a relationship with Adele Allfrey. At the counselling session, Andy was asked to focus on his past relationships and when Katie dropped him off, he blames her for his problems, claiming her affair with Robert stopped him being able to trust a woman. Andy lost his temper and threw a tea cup at the wall. The following day, he apologized and invites her round for a chat. After drinking and reminiscing about their past, Andy and Katie sleep together. But the next day Katie tells Andy that it was a one off and said that they should remain friends. Andy reluctantly agreed but when Adele found out, she was angry with Katie and told her she felt betrayed. Adele moved out of Victoria Cottage, quit her job and left the village. In November 2010, Andy's romantic feelings for Katie continue as he shows jealousy towards her current relationship with police officer Nick Henshall. Henshall later starts a fire at the back of Victoria Cottage. The fire spreads and kills Terry Woods and Viv Hope. As Henshall does his job as the investigating officer probing the circumstances of the fire, he continues his relationship with Katie, which later gets him taken off the case. With his colleague, DC Prior, now investigating, it becomes increasingly likely that Henshall will be found out as the fire-starter. This, along with the fact that Katie discovers his first wife died in similar circumstances to Viv and Terry, causes him to panic and he ends up taking Katie hostage, before eventually committing suicide. Katie is left traumatised by the whole experience, as well as guilty that she ignored Andy's warnings about Henshall and she tries to give Andy her affections, which he continually but unsuccessfully pursued whilst she was dating Henshall (a reason why many villagers believed Andy to be the culprit responsible for the fire in an attempt to rescue Katie and be her hero), but he rejects her, telling her it is only because of her guilt that she wants to get back with him. It remains to be seen whether they ever will get back together again; they currently remain friends whilst pursuing other romances-Katie has since briefly dated Nikhil Sharma whilst Andy has established a live-in relationship with Alicia Harding.

Summer 2011 saw Katie start a relationship with boss Declan Macey her friend Mia's father. Katie was at first only interested in Declan to spite his x wife Ella Hart who had recently cheated on him but after their first date they quickly fell for each other. Manipulative Ella told Mia about their affair who was horrified and insisted Decalan end the relationship so the relationship was stalled for weeks, however eventually Mia came round to the idea and the relationship was back on but not before Declan told Mia the man her mother was having the affair with was going out with her at the time, causing Mia to loathe her mother and Ella left the village in shame but confessed to Declan he wasn't Mia's father Jai Sharma was. Declan kept this a secret from Katie at first but later Declan and Jai had a punch up at Jai's engagement party to Charity Tate making him confess the truth about Mia's parentage.
